Astrological Timing of Marriage & Divorce (2) Albert Einstein

These are the astrological events that coincided with Einstein's relationship development (his career development was discussed in here.)

1896: Einstein enrolled in mathematics program of ETH Zurich. There he met his future wife Mileva Maric; Solar Arc Venus = Sun/Moon during 1896.

1903: he married Mileva on January 1903 - SA Sun = Venus was exact.

1914: SA Neptune = MC - Einstein separated from his wife, who took the children with her. He moved on to Berlin to teach there. Must have been a lonely time ("ego wipeout" of Neptune-MC contact).

1919: He divorced his wife after five years of separation (Feb 1919). SA Pluto=Saturn ruling 7th; also, Tr Pluto was exactly conjunct Saturn. He married Elsa Lowenthal in June of the same year. Pluto - Saturn contact often suggests a threat of loss in any area of life (in this case, loss in the 7th house area of marriage was strongly suggested through the Solar Arc and transit picture), and for Einstein the old relationship was destroyed in order to make new marriage possible.

The "Spice" Analogy for Midpoint Analysis

In the Newark seminar, Noel Tyl gave a delightful, "cooking" analogy to the analysis of midpoint pictures. For those new to midpoints, the measurements are written like this:

Saturn = Mercury/Venus

This means the planet Saturn is making a hard aspect (conjunction, square, or opposition) to the midpoint (literally, a point in the exact middle between two planets) of Mercury and Venus.

If planets on the right side of the equation (Mercury and Venus in the above example) are like tomatoes and lettuce in a salad, then the planet on the left is like a spice that adds a particular flavor to the salad. We know that cayenne pepper is dramatically different from oregano in its effect, etc...So different planets add different flavors.

To interpret the above example, the right side (the midpoint of Mercury & Venus) is "beautiful thoughts, artful communication, idealistic mindset", etc. In other words, it is the point at which the energies of Mercury and Venus blend together. Just like tomatoes and lettuce in a salad.

With the left side we have Saturn - a distinctively realistic "flavor" - shall we think of some bitter spice that has medicinal properties such as cardamom or turmeric? When added to the sweet, tasteful mix of Mercury/Venus, this leads to several possible results:

1) The idealism of Mercury/Venus may be severely tested through frustrations and "reality checks." The spice may be too bitter so as to ruin the salad.

2) But this may lead to an idealism tempered with realistic awareness - a kind of mature, grounded idealism may result.

3) The practical nature of Saturn may lead to useful utilization of the talent of artful communication. In other words, a skill with words may be used successfully to realize one's ambition.

In real life, all three of these may manifest - one may acquire maturity through the frustration of idealistic, naive thoughts, and eventually learn to temper the idealism with experience and wisdom.

We could do this exercise with all midpoints - Don McBroom, the author of the superb Midpoints, suggests that midpoint pictures tend to be the strongest when they are close to being exact in orb. He suggests checking the closest midpoint picture in a horoscope to gain additional insight about the person's strengths and challenges.

The above Saturn=Mercury/Venus picture happens to be the closest midpoint picture in my horoscope, and this exercise inspires me to work at manifesting its best potential.

Vocational Development through Time - Albert Einstein

In the last post the idea of "stepping stones" was introduced in order to synthesize the disparate astrological events through time into a unified stream of life development. In music (a Brahms symphony, let's say), each new melody introduced somehow serves to develop the whole story through time; in life, each new development might also serve to flesh out (however gradually) the core purpose of our being.

The life of a symphony may be only 40 minutes, but for human beings these developments take years to occur, until finally the purpose of the composer-creator becomes clear (or it may not, depending on how we play our part.)

I believe it is vital for astrologers to be able to understand each life event in terms of a big picture - the picture may have to do with our relationship fulfillment in this life, or finding and expressing our true vocation - what we have come here to do.

Take Albert Einstein's life development for instance (here is the chart). Using the Solar Arc approximation of 1 degree per year, we can easily see the Midheaven arcing to the Sun at age 10-11*, and Uranus arcing to oppose the MC at age 11 as well.

Using a shorthand we write this as age 10-11: MC=Sun, Uranus=MC. What happened? At age 10 Einstein was introduced to science, mathematics and philosophy. He began reading Kant's Critique of Pure Reason and Euclid's Elements. We can see this period as a major beginning in Einstein's vocational journey, who began to learn about deductive reasoning and the mathematical tools of scientific inquiry through these books.

Similarly we see Jupiter=MC at age 15. This was when Einstein wrote his first scientific work (titled "The investigation of the state of Aether in magnetic fields.") There was also a relocation and other things involved (along with more astrological measurements), but in terms of the vocational story we're developing, we see this first work as a major stepping stone toward his career in science and academia.

At age 21-22 we see MC=Mercury, then MC=Saturn along with Uranus=Sun. At age 21 he graduated from ETH Zurich with a degree in Physics. At age 22 he published a paper in a prestigious physics journal: so now he has a university degree and is a published scholar - more stepping stones.

At age 26 we see a major milestone: Jupiter=Sun, promising major reward; as well as Node = Jupiter suggesting rewarding associations. This was when he published four important papers, later to be called Annus Mirabilis Papers. One of these papers led to his receiving a Nobel prize 16 years later; another one was about the theory of special relativity. He received his Ph.D at this time.

We can see this period as a major moment that pulls together the series of career-related events that began at age 10. This is enough to make a good story; but life continues on, and so does his development.

The Solar Arc approximation of 1 degree per year doesn't work as well for Spring-Summer births after 30 years of age, but we know that in 1915 SA Pluto was on the Aries Point (highly visible event of empowerment - written Pluto=AP), and Jupiter=Mercury (Rewarding communication). This was when Einstein published his General Theory of Relativity.

Einstein received a Nobel prize in Physics in 1921. SA Nodal axis was on the MC ("being recognized" - Tyl.) Again, this is a major milestone that summarizes the development so far - 32 years after he started reading Kant and Euclid.

Each of these events can be perceived as a stepping stone for Einstein's vocational development, and at the same time it was a worthy goal at that particular moment in life (when you are in a university, it becomes your goal to graduate; when you are working on a particular scientific problem, the goal is to find and publish a solution.)

Looking back from the vantage point of 1921, we can see these events flow together like one gigantic symphony leading up to the climactic moment of his receiving a Nobel prize. But there is no way Einstein could have known all the things he was going to think and write about when he started studying at age 10. He just kept on doing what felt meaningful and interesting to him at the time, and all the while this impressive story was unfolding.

Maybe the same thing could be happening to each one of us, as we follow our own path of development. When trying to project into the future, it may help to look through past major events in order to identify the unifying developmental themes. This way we are more in touch with the flow of music that is our life story.

(for detailed astro biography of Einstein, this is a work in progress, with transits and a progressed Moon included.)

* Note that MC at 12 degrees & 50 minutes of Pisces is slightly less than 11 degrees away from the Sun at 23 degrees 30 minutes of Pisces - hence the arc will be exact at the latter part of age 10, and continue to be in effect for the earlier part of age 11. Usually you can just think age 11, with the awareness that there may be some overwrap between ages. For a full detail of Solar Arc method, check out the earlier post about Solar Arc progression, as well as Noel Tyl's book Solar Arcs.

Synthesis in Prediction: Stepping Stones to the Future

One of the key insights Noel Tyl shared in the Newark seminar was that life events tend to happen gradually, in stages. As an example he talked about divorce: "When does a divorce begin? Did it begin three weeks ago, or three years ago; Or did it start when you got married?"

I know a couple who got married and on the first day the husband said to his bride "I'm not sure if I want to be married." For them, divorce was starting to occur from the moment of marriage! Separation doesn't just "happen" because of a certain transit or Solar Arc measurement - it builds up over time.

Noel said if we see multiple major transits and Arcs over a multi-year period, we can see them as "stepping stones for the person to reach the other shore" rather than isolated events.

The "other shore" usually is the improved circumstance of life, such as major changes in career direction or relationships. To go from where we are to where we want to be, we make changes in steps - we may start to take courses related to the new professional direction, or seek out a group that has similar goals to our own, etc.

The gradualism of life development happens in many areas such as career, relationship and health; Success occurs when multiple steps are taken to prepare the ground for it - for example, job interview process takes some time, and astrology may reflect its development through multiple significant transits over the span of several months. Also, most professional qualifications require about two years of concentrated study and training before you can start practicing in the field.

Similarly, the breakdown of a system (e.g. business failure, divorces, or critical illness) occurs when multiple stresses are experienced over time that pushes it over the edge: How many betrayals and disappointments can a relationship withstand? How much loss can a person endure before her body begins to collapse under pressure? It all depends on the individuals involved, and part of the therapeutic process is to increase the client's resistance to stress through the cultivation of positive, healthful habits.

Ascendant and Identity (3) Taurus Rising

Element: Earth- practical orientation and concrete achievement strengthens identity formation.

Mode: Fixed- stability and reliability leads to identity strength.

Taurus Ascendant seems to suggest the need for cultivating stability, practicality and consistency in the course of strengthening the identity. As ASC acts to modify the energy of Sun-Moon blend, Taurus may imply the need to ground the intellectual idealism of Air element into practicality, stabilize the emotionalism of Water into calmness, and channel the expressive energy of Fire into solid achievements.

As Venus rules Taurus, development of aesthetic awareness and relationship enjoyment may also need to be incorporated into self image (the same could be said of Libra ASC which is also ruled by Venus.) The aestheticism may not manifest as a full blown professional interests in arts, but merely as the ability to appreciate beauty, sensuality and people.

Things build power and presence through consistency – with Taurus, life structures such as relationship, career etc. are built to last, and staying in the same relationship or work for a long time through continuous effort may really provide a solid foundation that creates peace.

Another facet of Taurus is that of idealism related to Venus which represents “the beautiful world.” Actress and children’s rights activist Mia Farrow has Venus ruling her Taurus ASC in the 12th house, also ruling 6th house of social service. Barbara De Angelis has the same placement of Venus, and her search for ideal solutions in relationships has been well known.

The stability of Taurus may add certain amount of resistance to the frustration of ideals (i.e. they don't succumb as easily to despair.) Eventually the people who have this Ascendant may develop impressive staying power in maintaining their effort – which is definitely a mark of identity strength.

*By the way I really like the photo as the metaphor for Taurus - here is strength and beauty residing together, without aggression.

Self Worth Issues

In a horoscope, 2nd house symbolizes one’s feeling of self worth, and 8th house has to do with other people’s self worth. Tension in the 2nd or 8th house significator (i.e. house ruler or planets occupying it) may manifest as inability to give compliments to others, because it threatens one’s self worth to do so: the 8th house may overpower the 2nd house in one’s perception, threatening the self image.

To counteract such threat, one may adapt a superiority complex in an effort to artificially strengthen the self worth, basing one's valuation on some external qualities (looks, money, accomplishments, etc.) Another way self worth problem manifests is the habit of self deprecation - Noel Tyl said people put themselves down first so that others won't have a chance to do so.

In order to be able to give compliments and still avoid the perceptual imbalance between the 2nd-8th axis, one must cultivate enough genuine self worth. Nathaniel Branden, who wrote extensively about self esteem, asserted that self worth is not based on a passive attribute one has, but rather is based on how one lives – he thought the practice of living consciously with integrity, assertiveness, self-responsibility, and self acceptance would lead to a cultivation of genuine self worth.

When one’s self worth has been sufficiently strengthened, we could imagine a positive, reverse scenario to take place: one’s self worth may become so strong that in order to balance the 2nd-8th house axis, one feels the need to lift others up through compliments, edification, and by pointing out the talents and strength in others. In other words, it’s the feeling of “I like myself, and I’d like for you to like yourself as well so that we can appreciate each other.”

Noel Tyl is a master at finding people’s talents and strengths – whether you’re his client or a student, he finds something about you that is your special strength, and makes you believe in it. He is one of the most confident people I know [Tyl’s Mercury is in 8th house opposed by Pluto, with its deep awareness of people’s self worth and strengths.]

It’s no fun being around insecure, depressed people who have low self worth – especially once we develop a healthy self esteem. Then the next thing to do is naturally to try to lift others up, instead of tearing them down. Both actions usually aim at bringing the people to ‘our level,’ whether that implies lifting them up or tearing them down depends on how we perceive ourselves (that’s why we say things like “Let us not be pulled down to their level by resorting to violence”, etc.)

One suggestion I’ve heard that makes sense: if we hang around with people that are better than us in some regard (i.e. people that know more about something that we’re interested in, or are more successful at it) we tend to benefit by approaching their level. This way we can make sure that we keep growing.

Practical Considerations in Prediction

Each life is different, and we can't expect the cookbook like approach to work for everyone. Robert Hand has written a masterpiece called "Planets in Transit" which may also be useful for interpreting progressions and Solar Arcs, but like all cookbooks it tends to be general.

Even though the solar arc of Venus to the Sun or an Angle often suggests love relationships, if it happens early in life (under age 10 let's say), you generally won't expect a love relationship to occur. Similarly, Saturn arcing or transiting over MC wouldn't suggest career change for a child, but it may suggest a change of status in the family.

Another factor is the environment one is in - no change can happen in a restrictive environment that punishes it. If you live in a monastery on top of a mountain, most of the transits will pass you by (we could substitute for 'monastery' some other reclusive lifestyles people choose).

We know that passive lifestyle generally leads to inaction and lack of progress - no amount of astrology would help if we don't start to do something toward our own fulfillment. Education is another big factor: if we missed out on receiving college education for whatever reason, it may restrict our options for career advancement.

So when we try to project into the near future, we can't escape the effect of where we have been and what we have done up until now. This is also a good news, since this means we can prepare now in advance to create a better future.

Interpretative Principles for Solar Arc Planets

Here are some general guidelines for interpreting the meaning of planets progressed through the Solar Arc method. Since each "arc" will last for approximately 9 months (6 months applying, 3 months separating), we can add the faster moving planets and points to the interpretation.

ASC or MC arcs tend to manifest as visible events in terms of the planet that they are aspecting. MC arc may suggest a vocationally significant development. For example, solar arc of MC making a hard aspect to Pluto (which is written as MC=Pluto) may suggest an empowerment in terms of career, or a status change within the family such as relocation, etc.

Sun
suggests "illumination" of self in terms of the planet aspected by it. Solar Arc Sun=Venus may be a time where love relationship is especially highlighted, or when an artistic project receives rewarding recognition, etc.

Moon suggests the shift in emotional needs in terms of the aspected planets. Moon=Pluto may be a time when passion and zeal enters the heart; Moon=Jupiter may be when international interest opens up.

Mercury arc potentially suggests development of an idea, communication, or travels.

Venus arc may suggest development of love, relationship, arts, or pleasant dealing with the public.

Jupiter
often suggests rewards, opportunity, and education.

Saturn
suggests change of gears, ambition moving forward, or some inevitable hardship that leads to maturity.

Uranus
suggests status change that may lead to greater individuation, freedom, or innovative change. Individuation may necessitate a separation from old relationship.

Neptune
suggests inspiration or confusion. It tends to be beneficial for people in aesthetic professions such as artists, entertainers and fashion designers. In general, Neptune transit or Arc to the Angle suggests a time of "ego wipeout."

I've done some work on Neptune transits and Solar Arcs here.

Pluto
suggests change that may lead to empowerment, rebirth, and necessary endings or death.

Tim Neilson has written an exceptional piece about some examples of Pluto transits and arcs.

Nodal Axis may suggest important meetings, or connection with the public through work.

It's helpful to remember that not all of the solar arcs manifest as an observable change. In the next post we'll discuss some practical considerations that modify our expectation with regards to transits and solar arcs.

Predictions: Solar Arc and Secondary Progression

As per reader request I'll talk about progression methods for a bit. Noel Tyl has written extensively about his method of prediction in Solar Arcs: Astrology's most successful predictive system. The book is actually a summary of his predictive method incorporating transits, Solar Arcs, Secondary Progressed Moon, as well as Tertiary Progressed Moon.

Solar Arc over Secondary Progression?
Noel has also written a book about Secondary Progression early in his career, but now he prefers the Solar Arc method as the more reliable method. There are many fine astrologers using Secondary Progression as their tool of choice, so both methods are here to stay.

One of the key difference between the two methods is that in Solar Arc you get to advance the slower moving planets (Saturn onward) that hardly moves in the Secondary Progression method, so this tends to add more interpretive possibilities when forecasting.

Difference between transiting and Solar Arc planets
Solar Arc planets move at the speed of Secondary Progressed Sun, which is approximately one degree per year. This means even a fast planet like Venus will have a longer time frame (say 9 months) to be in orb using a Solar Arc method: this means Solar Arc of Venus to the Sun (written Venus=Sun) would last for 9 months, strongly suggesting the success of a relationship or an artistic endeavor.

In transit, Venus moves so fast that it can't have much of an impact except for a couple days of pleasantness. Similar thing can be said of Jupiter, whose transit is fleeting but under the Solar Arc, suggests a 9 months period in which reward or opportunity is likely to be presented.

Solar Arc is relatively easy to test in your own horoscope: add 1 degree per year to the natal planets to see how they move and form an aspect with the natal planet. The orb needs to be exact (less than one degree) in order for the Arc to be in effect, and we count conjunction, square and opposition only.

If natal ASC is at 12 Leo, and natal Saturn is at 22 Leo, this means Solar Arc ASC will conjoin Saturn at age 10 (we write ASC=Sat to denote this period), then we ask if there had been a status change within the family around that age: some Saturnian event such as death in the family, sickness, move, or change in father's position, etc.

A Major Principle - Looking for the Big Bells
"Nothing important happens in life unless the Angles, Sun, or the Moon is involved." - Noel Tyl

We give special importance to the transits or Solar Arcs to these hot trigger points (as well as one other point called the Sun/Moon midpoint) by slower planets (Saturn through Pluto), since they tend to correspond with major life changes most often.

In the next post we will explore some interpretive principles for Solar Arc planets.

What Kind Of Venus Does a Relationship Guru Have? (2) John Gray

Best known for “Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus,” psychotherapist and writer John Gray (chart) is the popular authority on love, sex and relationships. He was once married to Barbara De Angelis (the other relationship guru), but divorced her and now lives with his current wife and three children.

Gray’s Venus is prominently located on the Descendant. It rules his ASC (like Barbara De Angelis’ Venus), so an added importance is placed on relationships. Venus in Scorpio covers wide range of expression (from passionate sexuality to ecstatic spirituality), and I have heard him say that he was actually living as a celibate monk for several years, being able to hear the angels sing in his meditations.

He said once he was reintroduced to sexuality after that time period, he quickly became fascinated with sex itself (note the Scorpio Venus’ transition from celibacy to hyper sexuality), and it seems the decision to focus on relationships and communications between sexes came as a result of this.

His Venus is also squared by Pluto ruler of 7th, and in his case it seems to intensify the psychological insight, as well as the public (7th house) projection of his charm and charisma (Mars conjunct Neptune.)

Pluto-Venus aspect often suggests ‘wasted emotions’ through fear, but in his case this seems to be controlled – note the ascetic Sun-Moon in Capricorn located in 8th house, suggesting capacity for facing fear as well as solitude.

Zooming out to look at the entire chart, we see great emphasis on Western hemisphere (right side of the chart). This suggests ‘giving away of self to others, so much so that one’s self is left behind.’ This usually leads to ingratiating behaviors, and being taken for granted. In the process of trying to gain others’ approval, one’s self tends to be lost.

To balance this tendency, one needs to “return to the self”, so to speak, through honoring his/her own needs. I believe a big key for John Gray’s development was the monastic lifestyle he lived; this probably had the effect of strengthening his own identity enough so that he could return to the world and serve others without losing himself.

What Kind of Venus Does A Relationship Guru Have? (1) Barbara De Angelis

The popular author and lecturer Barbara De Angelis (chart) is one of the leading experts on relationships and personal growth. I’ve listened to some of her tapes and was very impressed by the honest, courageous and unabashedly romantic way she approached her relationships. She has married five times, and as far as I know has been married to the current husband for quite a while*.

Her horoscope shows Venus in Aries located within the 12th house – not an easy placement, as it suggests a subconscious ideal of relationship that may be hard to satisfy. Venus in Aries also suggests that there is a flirtatiousness to test one’s attractiveness; Venus rules her Taurus Ascendant, so others’ recognition of her own attractiveness becomes crucial in reinforcing her own identity.

Zooming out to look at the entire horoscope, all of her planets below horizon are retrograde – thus bringing the awareness into the southern hemisphere (‘a tendency to be pushed around by others, even to the point of victimization’ – Noel Tyl.) This suggests vulnerability in relationships that opens the door to a great deal of hurt. What is the cause of such tendency?

In all likelihood, this starts with the problematic relationship with the father (Saturn retrograde at the Aries Point) – either through his absence, passivity or tyranny. The probability is high that the father wasn’t able to give her the authoritative love that she needed as a child. It seems reasonable that this initial wound led to her life long quest for "solutions in love", fueled by the idealism of the Pisces Sun-Mercury-Jupiter conjunction.

The Piscean energy to feel and understand is channeled to help others, through the reigning need of Aquarius Moon at the Midheaven (the need to be socially significant, usually through helping others.) She is candid about her own relationship failures, and tries to transmit what she learned to everybody through her writing and lecture. I believe it’s this ability to remain vulnerable that endears her to the public.

It’s been said that we teach others what we need to learn – I find it inspirational that De Angelis has a traditionally challenging Venus placement and yet still managed to create a satisfying relationship, helping countless others to do the same in the process. I think there is a theory that says one way a 12th house planet functions better is by helping others through that planet’s symbolism – seems pretty fitting here.

*I wish there is more authoritative site for this info regarding the number of her marriage - I've seen sites saying four or five, so can't be sure.

Ascendant and Identity (2) Aries Rising & Self Assertion / Mars in Aspect

Element: Fire – Exertion and Ego recognition fuels identity formation.

Mode: Cardinal – Creation, initiation, and decisive action develops identity.

For Aries Ascendant, mastering the art of self assertion helps identity formation. As the modifier of the Sun-Moon blend, Aries rising would add image of physical, social or intellectual strength – consider examples such as Errol Flynn, Billy Graham, Bill Cosby.

As Aries is ruled by Mars, the position and aspect of Mars would significantly color the identity development.

When self assertion is a problem

If Mars is retrograde, the energy “goes in before it goes out.” This suggests internal censorship; we can expect an indirect way of expressing anger or self assertion. If Mars is retrograde in an Aries rising horoscope, this creates added difficulty in identity formation, because straightforward expression of the self assertive drive was somehow impeded.

If Mars is located within the 12th house, we can expect similar problem with expressing anger. If Mars is close to the ASC (within 8-10 degrees) from the 12th house, this usually suggests hidden anger.

Mars in aspect

1) Mars in hard aspect to Saturn may suggest several manifestations: in many cases it suggests doggedness, endurance and industrious nature (ambition strengthening action.) In best cases it leads to resourcefulness and indomitable will – consider examples such as Louis Armstrong, or astrologer/psychotherapist Stephen Arroyo.

In the problematic case, this combination would suggest frustrated or suppressed anger; as well as ruthlessness (ambition fueling aggression.)

2) Mars in hard aspect with Uranus would suggest a highly original, individuated application of energy. For an Aries rising with this aspect, this could mean that one must be courageous enough to pursue an unconventional path in the course of finding his/her true identity: consider Isadora Duncan, a revolutionary dancer who also broke the social code of the time by bearing three children from three different lovers.

The shadow manifestation would be the deviant, misfit, or the “rebel without a cause” type of behavior that isolates one from social mainstream. One may feel like an exile as a result.

3) Mars in hard aspect with Neptune would suggest charisma. Aries rising with this aspect may exude this kind of magnetism, as the self image is mixed with aura of mystery or fantasy – examples include Barbra Streisand and John Lennon.

In problematic cases, identity formation may be interrupted through bewildering circumstance; blurring of clear self image through drugs or other addictions may lead to unrealistic view of the self.

4) Mars in hard aspect with Pluto would suggest the extremes of passionate action or explosive temper. In an Aries rising with this aspect, finding a purpose that brings out deep passion may be crucial in forming an effective identity (example includes evangelist Oral Roberts).

If such purpose is not to be found, the frustrated passion may turn negative, leading to self destructive or tyrannical behaviors.

For all of these aspects, soft aspects (trine and sextile) would carry essentially the same meaning as the hard aspect, but they may not be as dramatic in their manifestation. Soft aspect tends to preserve the status quo, whereas hard aspect tends to motivate ongoing development through tension.

While I'm Traveling...Any Questions?

I've arrived in Japan yesterday, and will be staying here for the next 12 days. It's really tough to access internet here, so I won't be blogging, but I'm still writing. This may be a good time for me to do extra research, so here is my offer:

If anybody has any request for an astrological topic to be covered when I'm back, feel free to email me (hiroki@HolisticAstrologer.com) or leave a comment, and odds are I can work on it while I'm in Japan, and post it when I come back.
If you have questions regarding your own horoscope, I'll post a reply so long as I feel it is general enough to be relevant to others with similar patterns (make sure to include the time and city/state of birth).
